The creation of the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) in 1976 envisioned the formation of an effective and efficient organization, one that would provide a quality government service as well as promote partnerships with companies, and support competition based on innovation.
The role of INPI is centred (based) around the grant and protection of Industrial Property rights on a national and international level, in collaboration with the international organizations of which Portugal is a member, and also, processing and publication of patented technical and scientific information. It also actively promotes the use of the Industrial Property System, in order to support the country’s capacity to innovate and compete, as well as to ensure that competition is fair and to fight counterfeiting.
