The Shetland Islands Regulated Fishery (Scotland) Order 1999 is a Scottish Statutory Instrument (SSI 1999 No. 194), passed by the Scottish Parliament. It came into force on 31st January 2000. The Regulated Fishery Order (also known as a ‘Regulating Order’) grants the Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation (SSMO) the legal right to manage the commercial fisheries for lobsters, crabs, scallops, queens, whelks, razorshells, cockles, mussels and oysters within the area between the low water mark and the six mile limit around Shetland (see map Annex 1). Amongst other things, the Order gives the SSMO powers to impose restrictions and regulations, to issue licences, and to impose tolls. A copy of the text of the Order is included as an appendix to this booklet. The SSMO is a partnership of organisations with an interest in the future of Shetland’s shellfish fisheries. The organisation is legally constituted as a company limited by guarantee and is run by a board of 10 directors nominated by the partner organisations, as follows: Shetland Fishermen’s Association - 4 directors Shetland Islands Council - 2 directors Seafood Shetland - 1 director Scottish Natural Heritage - 1 director North Atlantic Fisheries College - 1 director Association of Shetland Community Councils - 1 director
