Landsbankinn was established on 9 October 2008 and is fully owned by the Icelandic government. Landsbankinn is based on the domestic operations of Old Landsbanki Íslands hf.
On 7 October 2008, following continued deterioration in financial markets, the Financial Supervisory Authority of Iceland (FME) availed itself of authorisation granted under Article 100 of Act No. 161/2002, as amended, to take control of Landsbanki Íslands hf. (Old Landsbanki). Landsbankinn (legal name NBI hf.) was subsequently created and Old Landsbanki’s domestic deposits, as well as a significant part of the old bank’s assets from its Icelandic operations, transferred to it.
Landsbankinn offers a full range of financial services and is the market leader in the Icelandic financial service sector with the largest branch network.
