The National Fisheries Authority (NFA) is a non-commercial statutory authority established and operating under the Fisheries Management Act 1998 and related regulations.
The process of transformation from a government to a streamlined statutory authority is being undertaken with the assistance of an institutional strengthening project using loan finance from Asian Development Bank as part of a wider PNG Fisheries Development Project that also provides infrastructure development in New Ireland and Manus.
The major priority of NFA over the last two years has been to change its corporate culture and turn the Authority into an effective regulator and overseer of the development of the Fisheries Sector. Under its plan, NFA has become a smaller, cleverer and more responsive Organisation, more clearly focused on management of PNG Fisheries for maximum sustainable benefit for the people of PNG. The revised organisation structure accommodates sixty (60) positions including support staff. The following compromises some of the major activities and developments in the reform of the Authority.
