On 30 December 1949 'Vishandel Gebroeders Van As' was founded by Jan van As (son of Hendrik and Geertje van As). It was at the Albert Cuyp market in the Amsterdam Pijp where the first market stall was located. With the cargo bike through the city, Jan made the first catering supplies for, among others, D'Vijff Vlieghen and Dikker & Thijs. The construction of the Telegraaf building moved the parking of the cargo bikes in the Smaksteeg to the Binnen Wieringerstraat 4, in the middle of the Jordaan. . Meanwhile, Fresh Fish Trader Jan van As, located at the Food Center in Amsterdam, is one of the larger suppliers of fresh fish. It is an extremely modern company with a traditional style of working. Innovative and progressive, but also sober and with respect for traditional values. Since 2005 Versvishandel Jan van As has been MSC certified by the Marine Stewardship Council. We cooperate as much as possible with suppliers who handle the fish stocks carefully and are preferably also certified by MSC. We have a very extensive and special assortment of foreign fish species, which we import from all over the world. We work as much as possible with suppliers worldwide who handle the fish stocks carefully. Special is the line caught and sustainable fish from Iceland, the Azores, Seychelles and Tahiti, such as the Albacore tuna.
