The Company was founded in December, 1996 and is one of the biggest shipowners in Lithuania. The company’s vessels are certified for the conformity to the international EURO-1 regulations, aiming on the increasing of quality of fish products. Good knowledge of market, elaborated investment policy allowed quick and successful development of the company. Now “Baltlanta” is the major oceanic fishing company of Baltic countries, which are new members of the European Union. Baltlanta is the largest of a group of companies with a total income before tax in 2002 of ca. USD 50 million. The group includes Baltic Atlant Shipping S.L. in Spain, which operates the fleet, the ship repair yard Laivite (www.laivite.lt) in Klaipeda port which offers all kinds of ship repair and docking facilities. Mauribalt is the company that provides ship repair and maintenance, while Irvinga is responsible for domestic and international deliveries of frozen fish and other cargoes by trucks. Baltlanta in Kaliningrad handles the sale and marketing of all fish products into Russia. AB Zuvis in Kaunas, Lithuania has cold store facilities and trades frozen fish. The group also includes a newly established processing plant Baltijos Delikatesai, which will start functioning early in 2003. Fishing is the most important activity in the group, which owns 26 vessels in total. Some of these are owned by Laivite and other companies and some by Mauribalt but Baltlanta owns the majority at 19 vessels. These are mainly fishing boats, including six 100 m trawlers, and reefers that are deployed off the coast of Mauritania, where they fish for and process mackerel, horse mackerel, sardinella and other pelagic species. The product, whole round horse mackerel, is sold mainly in West African nations, Cote d’lvoire, Togo, Benin, Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria
