OpenAlgae, LLC is a technology company developing algae-specific processing technologies to enhance the economics of oil production from algae. The company is jointly owned by the Board of Regents of the University of Texas and Organic Fuels Technologies, Inc. and leverages the development expertise of the Center for Electromechanics (CEM) and the Separations Research Program (SRP) at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus, as well as other UT groups such as Environmental and Water Resources Engineering (EWRE) and UTEX, the Culture Collection of Algae on the main campus. The company's algae concentration, electromechanical cell lysis, and solvent-less oil recovery technologies were developed in conjunction with EWRE, CEM and SRP, respectively, and were designed to help emerging biofuel platforms achieve cost parity with petroleum. OpenAlgae was named one of the rising venture Energy & Clean Technology companies at the 2010 Rice Alliance for Technology & Entrepreneurship Energy & Clean Technology Venture Forum in Houston.
