In 1970 the Fisheries Science Center established a foundation to keep the seed production of valuable fisheries in cooperation with the South Branch of Fisheries Cooperative Associations, Shirahama, Wakayama, are run by elected members from both consultations.
The Fisheries Laboratory was originally established as a marine research center in 1948 in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture. In addition to this forerunner, Kinki University now has other fisheries laboratories at Nachi Katsuura and Shingu City, with associated facilities in Susami and Nakahechi as well as the Ohshima annex in Kushimoto.
As well as being a comprehensive university with 44 departments in 11 schools, Kinki University is also a major educational organization that runs graduate schools, a distance learning division, four junior colleges, a technical college, a nursing school, and other schools from kindergarten through to high school.
