The new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) was take effect on 1 January 2013. The new Policy aims to provide EU citizens with a long term stable, secure and healthy food supply. To achieve the objective of the new CFP the EU fisheries will be managed by multi-annual plans and governed by the ecosystem approach and the precautionary principle. The challenge therefore is to make fishing environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. Myfish will contribute to the CFP by defining management measures. The concept of Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) will be extended and integrated with the economic and social components of the society. Myfish aims at developing new MSY indicators that can ensure high levels of fishery yield while respecting ecological, economic and social sustainability thus contributing to achieve the Good Environmental Status (GES) foreseen in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). Myfish has a multidisciplinary approach to the fishery management. To ensure this, the Consortium is composed of leading European institutes in the cross-cutting disciplines of ecosystem sciences, fisheries research, fisheries and environmental economics and social sciences, ensuring that all relevant disciplines are considered to fulfil the objectives of the project. The Consortium is composed of 31 partners from 11 European countries.
