The Northern Producers Organisation are principally an organisation charged with marketing members' produce under EU legislation.
NPO also has the daunting task of managing it's members annual fish quotas issued in the first instance by the European Commission to Member States at the outset of each calendar year. NPO operates a system of Individual Quota management (IQs) which has evolved over the years from a predominantly group based, or "pooled" system of quota management. Both management systems co-exist in todays dynamic and challenging fisheries environment.
Initially based in Aberdeen with offices in Grimsby, NPO moved to Fraserburgh in 2003 and changed from English to Scottish administration in 2008. A member of the Scottish Association of Fish Producer Organsations (SAFPO), NPO has a wide and diverse membership of 40 vessels ranging from trawlers to long-liners and from twin riggers to netters. Our vessels catch a wide variety of high value species including monkfish, hake, cod, haddock and langostine to name but a few. They are normally sold fresh at auction or frozen at sea in variety of presentations.
NPO's multinational membership derives from Scotland, Spain, England and Northern Ireland.
