Formerly the John T. Handy Co., Handy International is headquartered in Salisbury, MD, with a processing operation in the U.S. on a 5-acre parcel of land on the Chesapeake Bay in Crisfield, MD, and several additional processing operations in Asia.
Handy is one of the leading crab processors in the world and just celebrated its Centennial in 2003! Since 1903, Handy has been in the seafood business and began its operations as a tomato and fish processor. In 1917, Handy established itself as a soft shell crab processor making it the oldest soft shell crab company in the world. The ownership of the company remained with the Handy and Sterling families until it was sold in 1981 to a local businessman, Terrence N. Conway, who developed the company into the forerunner in the soft shell crab industry that it is today.
Through Terry's foresight, Handy has played an integral part in bringing soft crabs, crab cakes, crab specialty items, and pasteurized crab meat to the forefront of the world's seafood market. Handy has launched new product categories, developed state of the art technologies and patents and demonstrated award winning food safety practices and quality controls. In addition, Handy has taken these innovations and introduced its Chesapeake Bay expertise to manufacturing facilities globally.
In 2001, Silliker, an international food testing and auditing company, cited Handy for food safety excellence. Handy received Silliker's gold certificate with an excellent rating of 98%, a level attained by less than 10% of Silliker's auditing clients and one of the few food manufacturers to achieve this rating.
Handy's customers include leading retailers, foodservice distributors, and restaurants in the United States and worldwide.
