The University of Zaragoza is a public institution of research and higher in the service of society , combining a tradition of five centuries of history with the updating of their education lessons . The University of Zaragoza has its origin in a study of art, created by the church in the twelfth century, where grammar and philosophy were taught , and granting bachelor's degrees. The December 13, 1474 Pope Sixtus IV raised to the category of " Universitas magistrorum ' style of the University of Paris , at the request of Prince Ferdinand, then King of Sicily. The arrangement was ratified by the pope himself in 1476 and by King Juan II of Aragon in 1477. Throughout its five centuries of history, through the halls of the University of Zaragoza have spent the likes of botanist and economist Ignacio de Asso, Felix Latassa bibliographer , geographer Isidore of Antillon , the doctor Santiago Ramón y Cajal (Nobel Prize 1906) or the liberator of Cuba , José Martí. The University has awarded its highest honor , the Honorary Doctorate to figures such as Luis Buñuel, Ramón J. Sender or Rigoberta Menchú .
