We use only rope-grown mussels to ensure the production of the highest-quality shellfish, free from grit. Because they are grown in a tightly controlled environment, they are much less likely to suffer contamination – something that affects many other producers of seafood. Isle of Shuna’s production is strictly controlled so every mussel batch is safety-tested before sale. Our rope-grown mussels are cultivated in a sustainable manner in the waters surrounding the Scottish West Coast and the Shetland Isles. In 2005 Isle of Shuna plc acquired Demlane, the first Shetland company to grow mussels on long lines, and the pioneering UK seller of boxed, iced mussels. Together we have a 25 per cent UK market share of Scottish farmed mussels, and Demlane alone sells around 600 tonnes of mussels each year. IoS mussels on the Scottish west coast are mainly harvested between July and early the following year, as the Shetland harvesting season tends to occur later due to the colder waters of the region. Because of this, Isle of Shuna has almost year-round continuity of mussel production.
