Hagkaup is a leading retailer offering a wide range of products to meet the daily needs of customers with regard to food, clothing, beauty products, home furnishings and leisure products.
Hagkaup was founded in 1959 and was a mail order business only during its first years of operation. The first store was opened at Miklatorg in Reykjavík in 1967. In 1970, Hagkaup opened its first department store in Skeifan, where it is still operating to this day.

Hagkaup places particular emphasis on a wide product range and services as well as convenient access to products. There are around 8-10,000 products in the grocery department and around 30,000 in specialty products, which includes seasonal products. In its specialty products department, Hagkaup has emphasised a wide range of reasonably priced products, so that customers get more for their money.
Hagkaup operates eleven stores, with seven located in the greater Reykjavík area. Hagkaup also operates Stórkaup, a wholesaler for cafeterias, ships, restaurants and convenience stores. Hagkaup offers the same prices throughout all of its stores, nationwide. Three of Hagkaup's stores are now open 24 hours a day, at Skeifan, Garðabær and Eiðistorg.
