The mission of the American Prawn Cooperative is to provide enhanced marketing services and opportunities to regional producers of the Freshwater Prawn, Machrobranchium rosenbergi. Following nationally recognized best management practices; we guarantee only the highest quality freshwater prawn to our consumers.
The American Prawn Cooperative is currently a group of independent farmers and business persons located in North Carolina producing, marketing and selling Giant Malaysian Freshwater Prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii. These producers are mostly located in the eastern Coastal Plain, an area exceptionally well suited to the production of prawns in outdoor ponds. One reason for this is due to the mild climate. Warm spring-fall temperatures allow for an efficient, single, annual production cycle. Secondly, two significant natural resources are available which are: (1) the high quality aquifer water and, (2) the “tight” soils, perfect for water retention necessary in pond aquaculture. In addition, this region is located conveniently within driving distance to significant land and air transport hubs and is in close proximity to metropolitan and ethnic markets.
