The farm is situated in the inner bay of Saldanha harbour on the west coast and is unique in offering a rare piece of protected water on the South African coast that makes it possible to engage in sheltered sea farming activities suitable for mussel cultivation. Saldanha harbour is for this reason the only production area for mussels in S.A. The Blue Ocean Mussels farm was established in 2000, primarily focussing on producing mussels for the live and processed market. With access to 50ha of pristine ocean area Blue Ocean Mussels uses plastic rafts from which ropes as suspended. After the annual spawning season, usually around early summer, mussel larvae naturally settle on the ropes. From that stage the farmer takes over and carefully nurture the seed for a further 12 months after which mussels are market ready and can be harvested.
