Sotra Gruppen's history began in 1980 when Sotra Contracting AS was established. At the time, mechanical workshop services and trade with surplus material from the North Sea were the main business areas. The mechanical workshop was based at Vindenes in the municipality of Fjell. In 1998, the company was divided into several units, with Sotra Gruppen as parent company and Sotra Contracting AS and Sotra Marine Produkter AS (Sotra Anchor & Chain) as subsidiaries. The group's head office is still located at Vindenes, whereas the subsidiary company Sotra Anchor & Chain has a branch in Shanghai and warehouse facilities in Amsterdam and Aberdeen. All the subsidiary companies are wholly owned by Sotra Gruppen AS. In 1999, SOCON Norheimsund Sveis AS became part of the SOCON workshops.
