One of the largest schools in the South, Auburn University has an enrollment of roughly 24,600 students and offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in more than 140 different fields of study through about a dozen colleges and schools. Auburn University's student-teacher ratio is 18:1. It has a branch campus in Montgomery, Alabama. Auburn University was founded by the Alabama Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College. It became a state institution in 1872 and adopted its current name in 1960.
