The University of Sheffield traces its lineage to three schools -- the Sheffield Medical School, Firth College, and the Sheffield Technical School -- which combined in 1897 to form the University College of Sheffield.
The institution, which took its current name in 1905, now enrolls more than 24,000 undergraduate and graduate students from more than 100 countries. Among its academic programs are architectural studies, engineering, physics, and journalism. Five school alums have been granted the Nobel Prize (in Chemistry and Medicine/Physiology).
The university's research partners and clients include Boeing, Rolls Royce, Unilever, Boots, AstraZeneca, and GlaxoSmithKline.
