The Alutiiq Pride Shellfish Hatchery in Seward, AK began operations in 1992 to raise oyster seed for sale to the shellfish farms in the state of Alaska. Formerly managed by the Qutekcak Native Tribe, the Chugach Regional Resources Commission managed hatchery has now expanded its operations to include goeducks, cockles, razor clams, littleneck clams, oysters, mussels, and scallops. Research on the culture of blue King Crab and red King Crab is in its third year of development and promises to open the doors for discussion on the enhancement of these two important species. In addition, the CRRC and APSH have partnered with the Old Harbor Tribal Council and NOAA to train tribal members in operating a small hatchery and assist in the release and subsequent research of young crab into the wild.
