Stofnfiskur was founded in March 1991. Initially, the main emphasis was on breeding and selection for ocean ranching of Atlantic salmon, followed by the development of breeding and selection for salmon farming. However, the growing demand for salmon egg production from farming operations throughout the world, meant that, by 1995, the company was already exporting eggs to Chile and Ireland.
More recently, the business emphasis has expanded from producing and selling salmon eggs to the provision of specialist advice on egg production and supply. Given the company’s increasing focus on long-term marketing and expertise contracts, it’s expected that such contracts will account for more than 80% of Stofnfiskur’s turnover within the next five years.
Many of our customers have developed their production of salmon smolts into recirculation technology where most of the water and heat is reused to increase the production. This means a much faster growth of salmon fingerlings increasing the production. At the same time the need for availability of eggs on year round bases is a reality.
