KMI was established to study and analyze the exploitation, utilization and preservation of the ocean and promotion of the fishing industry through the results of research and recommendations.
The Marine & Coastal Policy Research Department aims to develop innovative policies that will contribute to enhancing the quality of life and creating added value for the nation through systematic management of coastal and marine species, resources and environment.
In order to enhance the quality of research and effectively support government policies, the department is strengthening the ability of its researchers in various fields and establishing a network of domestic and foreign experts and specialists in marine policy. These policies lay the foundation for interdisciplinary research and cooperation of joint research by industry, academia and research institutes.
The Fisheries Policy Research Department conducts basic research as well as economic, social and policy related research in all fields of the fisheries industry including production of fish and fisheries products, resource management, trade, international cooperation and fishing village development, so as to promote fisheries as a sustainable and competitive industry and to construct prosperous and vibrant fishing villages.
The department also has highly talented researchers with extensive background and experience in various fields of fisheries. It focuses on devising a future-oriented and practical fisheries and fishing village policies by helping to set up a joint cooperative system including: government, businesses, academia and research institutions in Korea as well as in other countries.
