Lured to East Baltimore by the Maryland blue crab business was a southern gentleman by the name of Herbert Green, or Herb as his friends and neighbors called him.  Herb established the first Maryland Blue Point Crab House in 1951 in Patterson Park on Orleans St. and Montford Ave. Maryland hard crabs were purchased locally and sold to a welcoming crowd.  In early years, before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was built Herb and his sons took the ferry to the Eastern Shore to purchase the crabs for Blue Point.  The Crab House became a family run business.  Herb was an expert crab man and taught his trade to his sons, Vere and Earl Green. The Patterson Park carry out Crab House is still a family business that is currently run by the Green brothers.  Through the years, not only did Herb’s sons take over the business, but his grandchildren while they grew up, worked the Crab House in various capacities.  Some are still in school, some have gone on to be professionals, such as businessmen, Doctors, and one is soon to be an Attorney.  This family run crab house is one of the oldest in Baltimore. In the 1990’s a business neighbor, Steve Ring, formed a business partnership with the Greens with the idea of expanding to the suburbs.  The Owings Mills location was opened in 1999 and drew customers from multiple counties.  Members of the Green and Ring Families, including Steve’s sons, worked this location together serving customers and accommodating their requests.  A few years later, the Westminster location was established to serve a market that many had been driving 20 to 30 minutes to Owings Mills to purchase Blue Point’s steamed crabs, crab cakes and assorted products.
