HowMuchFish.com is a project of the Center for Consumer Freedom. We’re a nonprofit consumer-rights group, and we’re concerned that fish is getting a bad name. It shouldn’t be that way, since seafood offers such a good mix of protein and healthy fatty acids.
If you’ve seen scary stories on TV about your favorite fish, or read alarming information online about seafood and health, chances are most of what you’ve learned just isn’t so. And this website is a reality-check on all of it.
Why have we set up a simple calculator that shows the risks and benefits of eating seafood? Simple: because no one else has done it. Not the federal government, not the seafood industry, and not even the environmental organizations that routinely squawk about how dangerous seafood supposedly is.
Besides, we believe you—the consumer—ought to understand the big picture about fish. Not just the scary part. The numbers in the HowMuchFish.com calculator are based on publicly available government data which demonstrate that the proven benefits of seafood consumption outweigh any hypothetical health risks from mercury. Just tell us how much you weigh (we promise not to blab!) and which of the most popular seafood items is your favorite. We’ll do the rest.
