IRD is a French public science and technology research institute under the joint authority of the French ministries in charge of research and overseas development. Through three main missions (research, consultancy and training), the Institute conducts scientific programs contributing to the sustainable development of Mediterranean and tropical regions, with an emphasis on the relationship between man and the environment.
IRD research is conducted in liaison with French higher education and research institutions and with partners in the South. 36 % of the Institute's staff work overseas, 600 of its technical staff are from the countries of the South, and foreign researchers are directly involved in its research programs.
The IRD is an active participant in numerous operations supported by the European Union and takes part in many international scientific programs.

L'Institut de recherche pour le développement est un établissement public français à caractère scientifique et technologique qui intervient depuis plus de 60 ans dans les pays du Sud. Il est placé sous la double tutelle des ministères chargés de la Recherche et de la Coopération.
Ses activités de recherche, d'expertise, de valorisation et de formation ont pour objectif de contribuer au développement économique, social et culturel des pays du Sud. Elles se déclinent autour de six priorités : lutte contre la pauvreté, migrations, maladies émergentes, changements climatiques et aléas naturels, accès à l'eau et écosystèmes.
En étroite collaboration avec leurs partenaires, 858 chercheurs, 973 ingénieurs et techniciens et 341 personnels locaux interviennent dans une cinquantaine de pays et participent à de nombreux programmes nationaux, européens et internationaux.
