Americans know Tengelmann Group best through its stake in A&P (Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company) supermarkets. But the 300 A&P stores are only a tiny part of Tengelmann, a big European DIY, food, and general merchandise retailer. Its four retail divisions operate more than 4,100 supermarkets, do-it-yourself home stores, and general merchandise stores, and the Plus Online business in Germany and 15 other European countries. Banners include: Kaiser's and Tengelmann (supermarkets) in Germany; OBI (DIY supply stores) in Germany and a dozen other European countries; and KiK (discount apparel and general merchandise shops) in Germany and four other countries. The family-run firm is led by CEO Karl-Erivan Haub.
Its international units include Kaiser's and Tengelmann supermarkets (Viersen), the OBI DIY stores (Wermelskirchen), the textiles and nonfood discounter KiK (Bönen) and the North American supermarket chain A & P (Montvale, USA).
