As shipbrokers, it’s our job to be the liaison between any two people or groups who have a contract. That could mean a contract between ship owners and charterers, or sellers and buyers in the sale and purchase market. Sometimes we work for only one side of the contract deal, while other times we work as the representative for both parties on the contract. Either way, we are involved in a variety of aspects of the business relationship. For instance, as the shipbroker, we will represent the contract to possible customers, negotiate the conditions of contract, firm up particulars of the agreement, and see the arrangement through until it’s completed.
As shipbrokers, we also work with a wide variety of ships, with varying amounts of capacity—ranging from coasters that transmit a few hundred tons to huge vessels that carry several hundred thousand tons. In addition, we work with a vast array of cargo, including raw bulk freight such as crude oil, iron ore, and coal, all the way through to completed merchandise.
