Puertos del Estado (Spanish National Ports & Harbours Authority) is a public body coming under the purview of the Ministry of Public Works & Infrastructure Development (Ministerio de Fomento).
It has overall responsibility for the entire state-owned ports and harbours system, and is tasked with implementing government port policy, and co-ordinating and ensuring the efficiency of the ports and harbours system made up of the 28 Port Authorities that encompass the existing 44 ports of general interest.
It exercises these powers on behalf of the State under the 1992 State Ports & Harbours and Merchant Navy Act (Ley 27/1992, de 24 de noviembre, de Puertos del Estado y de la Marina Mercante), as amended by Act 62/1997 of 26 December.
